Introduction
DNA is the information-carrying molecule found within living organisms. Every living cell contains instructions that direct growth, development, repair, and reproduction. The discovery of DNA revealed that life contains vast amounts of highly organized information.
For creationists, DNA raises one of the most important questions in the origins debate:
Where did the information come from?
What Is DNA?
DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid) functions as the instruction manual for life.
Inside DNA are coded sequences that:
- Build proteins
- Regulate cellular functions
- Control growth and development
- Pass inherited traits to offspring
The human genome contains approximately 3 billion base pairs of genetic information.
DNA uses four chemical “letters”:
- A (Adenine)
- T (Thymine)
- C (Cytosine)
- G (Guanine)
Just as letters form words and sentences, these chemical bases form instructions that guide living organisms.
DNA as Information
One of the most remarkable discoveries of modern biology is that DNA functions much like a language or computer code.
Information is not merely a chemical substance. Information is the arrangement of symbols that communicate meaning.
A book contains information because letters are arranged in a meaningful sequence.
Computer software contains information because code is arranged in a meaningful sequence.
Likewise, DNA contains information because its chemical bases are arranged in a meaningful sequence.
The question is not merely where the chemicals came from, but where the information originated.
The information found within DNA directs the construction of proteins and the operation of living systems.
Many creationists argue that information is always the product of intelligence because information requires organization, purpose, and specification.
The Origin of Genetic Information
One of the greatest unanswered questions in origins science is the origin of genetic information.
Even if the chemical building blocks of life could form naturally, scientists must still explain how meaningful information arose.
DNA is not simply a collection of chemicals. It contains instructions that must be arranged in the correct sequence to produce functional proteins and living systems.
Creationists argue that information is fundamentally different from matter and energy. Throughout human experience, information is always traced back to an intelligent source.
Books come from authors.
Computer code comes from programmers.
Blueprints come from engineers.
Likewise, many creationists conclude that the vast quantities of information found within DNA point to an intelligent Designer.
The Bible teaches that life was created by God and that all living things reproduce according to their created kinds.
For this reason, many Christians view DNA as powerful evidence of design rather than chance.
Why Chance Cannot Create Information
Many scientists agree that DNA contains information, but there is significant debate about how that information originated.
Random processes can rearrange existing information, but they do not explain the origin of meaningful information.
For example, shaking a box of Scrabble tiles may produce random combinations of letters, but it will not reasonably produce a complete book.
Likewise, random mutations may alter existing genetic information, but creationists argue they do not explain the origin of the vast amounts of specified information required for life.
The origin of biological information remains one of the most challenging questions facing naturalistic explanations of life’s beginnings.
Creationists believe the most reasonable explanation is that information originates from an intelligent Creator.
